1st Grade:
Putting Cooperstown on the Map
The 1st Grade Classes focused on Tourism in Cooperstown and how to navigate using a map.
Exploration of the topic began with a lesson on cardinal directions and how to use a compass. Students embodied a compass, labeling cardinal directions on the classroom walls, and using their bodies to point North, South, East, and West.

The next session was a bus tour of Cooperstown Village. The bus stopped at many locations in town, allowing a chance to talk about why people visit these places. Students were challenged to read a compass as the bus was moving and figure out what directions we traveled to each destination.
Every 1st grader took a picture with a cartoon tourist at a local spot and wrote why they chose it. Finally, students used their knowledge of cardinal directions to pin their spot on a map of Cooperstown. Using the compass rose and navigating from the school they successfully mapped the character tourist whereabouts.
